The Avon Land Trust is proud to announce a new initiative
called The Unplugged Learning Project ~ In collaboration with the Avon
Public Schools and the Avon Public Library, the mission is to promote
nature-based learning, pedestrian travel, environmental stewardship, and
outdoor recreation for purposes of improving and enriching the education
of our children and the quality of life for all residents.
The 'project' involves 3 steps: Education, Promotion and
Creation.
Phase One focuses on educating the public on the value of
connecting children to the natural world and ensuring that 'no child is left
inside.' To that end, in collaboration with the Avon Library, the One
Town, One Book event has been launched, inviting all residents of Avon to
read Richard Louv's inspiring book, Last Child in the
Woods
On Thursday, March 5th at 7:30 p.m. in the Avon
High School auditorium, the Avon Land Trust will officially launch The Unplugged
Learning Project. Local author, historian, and speaker David Leff, will lead a
discussion on how to combat what Louv calls 'nature deficit disorder.' In
addition, the Land Trust team will unveil specific projects they have planned ~
projects that benefit all residents, from pre-school
children to senior citizens ~ and ideas for how the community can use
'Last Child' as a springboard for a variety of future projects.
Please visit this website, www.avonlandtrust.org/unplugged for text & video about the Unplugged Learning Project
and the One Town, One Book event; or to purchase $5 copies of the book
(there's a limited number and they are selling fast!); or to post a
comment on their blog. A limited number of copies will be available to check
out at the public library.
This a one-of-a-kind opportunity for Avon residents to
join together for a common cause ~ that of 'unplugging' and taking more walks in
the woods.
And, whether you are able to read the book or not, please
join the Avon Land Trust and your neighbors at the Unplugged Learning launch
event on Thursday March 5th, Avon High School, 7:30 pm.
