The Avon Historical Society Revisits “The Good Old Days”
2 PM, Saturday, March 15
Avon Senior Center
The Avon Historical Society will revisit “The Good Old Days” on Saturday, March 15th at 2 PM at the Avon Sr. Center. Gordon Williams will speak on how Americans, both rural and urban, lived in the Good Old Days of 1890s. Grover Cleveland was in the White House, bicycling was a fad, very few homes had bathrooms, and many were ‘dry and dark’, i.e., no running water and no electricity. But business was booming; those were the days of the Robber Barons and the sweatshops. Immigrants were flocking to America.
Mr. Williams is a retired history teacher who has received a number of awards including Trumbull’s Teacher of the Year, runner-up Connecticut Teacher of the Year and Milliken Educator Award. He spent a year in England as a Fulbright exchange teacher and three weeks in Japan as a Fulbright scholar.
The Avon Sr. Center is located at 167 West Avon Road. Admission will be free to the members of the Avon Historical Society and to the Avon Jr, Women’s Club which has provided financial support to this program. Non members are welcome and will be asked for a $3 donation. For more information contact Ruth Woodford at 676-0544.
